This discussion is for you to talk about what's working for you right now when it comes to marketing your music.
I think this will help other musicians and songwriters to prioritize their activities, since they'll be able to find out what's working for other people. This will be especially valuable to upcoming musicians.
So...what's working for you? What are you doing to sell music and get people to shows these days?
Relationship with fans.... This is essentially what all the social networking and blogging hoo haa is all about....... Once there is some kid of 'relationship' with the fans then conversion to sales becomes hell of a lot easier. Essentially you build enough trust to convert the connection to sales. Just like any other retail outlet or brand.
We have a very small market over here in Australia compared to the US so this becomes even more important. It seems that people will gladly come to a gig or buy products if they are personally invited, but wont listen to gig announcements or advertising,,,,,,, so the relationship has to exist whereby people feel as if they are getting a personal invitation..... my 2 cents - www.robblackmusic.com
Since I can't do live shows at the moment, I'm testing Jango.
It's been eye opening. For example, they offer reports on where your songs are making headway as well as what other bands your fans like. While there's one band I'm not surprized to see listed there, I've been shocked at the other bands listed.
They also offer ways to communicate with your fans that would be impossible with analog radio. So, there's serious potential for relationship building.
I'll be continuing forward with more songs to see what long term effect all this 'airplay' is doing for me.
These are all great thoughts! One thing we have done is to hire a PR firm Glass Onyon to help with marketing our new CD and get in contact with both reviews and airplay. We are starting to get reviews and stations are starting to pick us up around the country. The one issue we continue to have issues with is booking. In Chicago they really don't support original music that well. Cover and Tribute acts are huge here. We are trying to connect with an agency or company to get us on a tour so we can do this for a living. We aren't looking to be gigantic rock stars (although that would be cool) but to do this for a living and doing something for a living that you love so much would be a dream come true!
First, I don't know much of anything about the music business,
but I do know about modern online marketing techniques.
Online marketing techniques can help you connect with a fan
base of people that are interested in you. Once you've made
that connection, you can then build a relationship with them
on a more personal level.
One idea is, of course, your fans follow you because they feel
they have something in common with you. Their connection
is emotional in some way because you speak their language.
So instead of just telling them about your new album or the
upcoming show, you can promote your values and ideas
through your websites and blogs, etc.
Think about what they are interested in and why they're
interested in you.
And also it's the experience they get with you at the show
or when they're listening to your music. That's very important.
If you don't have an email list, get one and give them an
opportunity to sign up for it, and remember to promote
your values and theirs when you send them an email.
Talk about an experience that you've had, or some cause
that you, and/or the band is passionate about.
Building the relationship is the key.
So what is the result? They naturally want to come to your
show. They're looking up the show dates. They're inviting
their friends to come.
So when you do mention the show date, they are there.
Even though many things have changed for me since June of this year. I do have access to the net. I try to read marketing info by Derek Sivers, David Hooper and other marketing people on Linkdin. I keep it real by tell people about me and the shows. I am on facebook, twitter, myspace, whotune, and plaxo. I am selling digital music. All my cds I had were sold. I have a few left on-line. I am still singing and trying, so I will keep that up til I can get where I want to be.
Hi. I'm new to this website. I'm a beginning music composer for pop songs. I'm looking to link up with lyricists who would like to work with a composer to see if we can create some songs together. I live in New York City, but we can correspond by email and phone. If interested, please contact Joel at jturtel@yahoo.com, and 718-447-7348.
Thanks.
