Plan for Music Publishing and Licensing Income (call notes from Podcast)

Hi David, thanks for taking my call, here are my notes:

Dainis Michel

written a few eBooks on songwriting and sightsinging

including

how to write your songs down,
and
sight-singing for the 21st century

which are both really useful skills and i put a friendly and accessible spin on em

My question to Dave was:
1) I'd like to follow a cookie-cutter formula that you guide me through to have as many pitches of my existing music (or my creative songwriting or composition) as possible in the shortest amount of time bringing in the most amount of money

Response:
Assess personal situation (no such thing as a cookie cutter)
Subscribe to a tip sheet (2 cents per record)
-whoops, didn't hear David asking about what genre I specialize in:
-my response: genre can be seen as "flavor," I mean, you can play just about any song in just about any style.
-sell ring tones, YouTube vids, commercials, multimedia music (royalty free), iPhone apps.

You mentioned "kendal," (sp?), what is that?

To respond to the question about genre:

My style has developed over the years as I've progressed in life, skill, and experience. I started off playing in various bands in the 90's and I would call the style alternative acoustic folk funk rock. I grew up in a black neighborhood in Chicago and spoke Latvian and English at home. I had a cooler name for the genre back then. I have an "audio summary" of these kinds of songs here:

In getting my Master's in music composition, I actually had to practice writing in various styles, so then I was left to figure out what my "genre" or style was. I started doing what I would call "style combinations" where I would take styles of music that one would think are "impossible" to combine, and I would explore combining them. Examples: baroque and jazz, 12-tone with hip-hop and rap influences in a surround-sound flute piece, etc.

I have an audio summary here:

My recent songwriting might be considered plaintive and introspective with a very powerful and positive core.

Here's a video of a tune that could be performed in various styles including: country, r & b, cross over rap and mainstream, plus a few others.

So, I'm off to bed, and what I'd like to do with this thread is put together a plan of action for me to progress with this exciting income stream.

Cheers and a big thank you!
Dainis
